The secret about street photography ?
Street photography… when I started street photography I thought it was photography using the street environment as a background: light diffraction in the windows, high buildings to create your frame, nice balance of nature and concrete, bicycle and cars to bring mobility in the picture…. And with time I could find in it soooo much more…
Street photography is for me for example the ability to rediscover a city, just because you simply look at things. How many times I discovered a hidden gem that was laying there everyday on my walk to work.
But more importantly street photography is a permanent social experience. You permanently try to understand the context of the people you see in the street ( what are they talking about ? How do they know each other ? Do they meet for the first time ? Is he feeling lonely ? …) and of course most of the time you are wrong, through your photos you create the story they could live in, you might simply project your own feelings on them. Is street photography simply a mirror ? This question is too complex and philosophic for today, let’s park it for later :)
Another thing that I realize is that I enjoy more and more talking with my subjects. The fact that you openly share with a person that you would like to take a picture triggers very different emotions in her. Most of the time you suddenly see big happiness or fun enlightening their face and in a way the story you’ll tell in your picture will be potentially more authentic and most importantly it will create this unique social connection that will make for you this picture even more important and unforgettable.
In this picture my subject was not very talkative :) but I can tell you that he had a lot to say !!
What could be his emotion ? My bet is that with his very angry face he is the happiest dog in the world, sharing all experiences with his master and waiting to have few potatoes chips of is owner menu….
Always trying to ask myself why I’m doing something, trying to find it’s purpose ( not always don’t worry I’m also easy going 😅) I realised that street photography was the part of taking photos I enjoyed the most for its social dimension and the quality of the gear I put between the subject and me is just a simple facilitator ( because indeed street photography with an iPhone can create amazing pictures but doesn’t trigger the same emotion in people …)
Tell me about your photography style : street, landscape, sport, portrait ? which one do you enjoy the most and why ?
