Emotions ….

what is photography if not an amazing way to tigger emotions for viewers… but the game is getting trickier when it’s time for the photographer himself to catch emotions… in a way, while doing vidéo it’s a bit easier as you can play in many many different aspects : music, speed, effects, voice tone , dynamic faces expression, etc …

how to capture a dynamic emotion when everything is frozen ? How to explain what happen before and what will happen after when this only you have is 1/1000 of a second.

Like in video you’ll see that you have many parameters :

  • colors and tones : while post editing your shot one good trick to adjust and play with the tone balance. Warm tones will make things chill, warm, sweet, welcoming while cold tones will make thing dynamic, sharp, edgy, more distant … needless to say that the color of the sky will naturally play a critical role when you’ll want to capture an emotion.

  • Movement : everything in your picture not being in its most common and stable position will create dynamism and emotion that goes with it. For example in this picture you see clearly some floating textiles, floating hairs, moving legs that transmit for you this feeling of movement and joy.

  • Face expression : seems of course very obvious but the face expression will play an important role in capturing immediate emotions but again, as the first second of an image view triggers the perception of emotions for the viewer, the color contrast will really help to impact more significantly the look and feel ( ie. White teeth ok red lips…..)

  • motion blur : your background will naturally impact a lot the way you can capture emotion and a good trick to impact that could be for example to use panning to create this subject detachment and put emphasis on the emotion of your subjects see everything you need to know on panning shot here

And on your side, tell me how you capture and freeze emotions in jour shots ??

Has shared above here the trick is really more into the blue sky, the face expressions and the hair and textile movement that all together gives this super lively and happy feeling. Has you can see the shutter speed (1/6400s)was crucial for 2 reason…

  • not over expose the seen by too much light hitting the sensor ( indeed my aperture is very high here to detach the subjects (f1,8))

  • freeze the moment and not have any blurry part for the subject.
